Rapid City - Ice Bowl Raises $1000
Posted by Daniel on Monday 16 February 2009 - 21:14:07

(Rapid City) The 8th Annual Disc Golf Ice Bowl was held Saturday, January 31st, sponsored by Scheels All Sports. 48 warmly-dressed players teed off in 50 mph winds at 11:00 a.m. and competed in the annual fundraiser event. The turnout raised $1,000 to benefit Community Food Banks of South Dakota.

Official Ice Bowls are played at over 225 courses across the United States, Canada and Europe in January and February. Each event is encouraged to find a local charity to support, with an emphasis on fighting hunger. Last year’s events combined to raise over $260,000. Locally, the Rapid City Ice Bowl is hosted by the Black Hills Disc Golf Confederacy, and since 2002 has raised $5,265 for local charities.

In the Pro Division, Rapid City’s John Anderson led all players with a 49. The strong Advanced Amateur field was led by Ryan Smith of Spearfish, who carded a 50. Don Altmyer of Spearfish led the field of eight players in the Grandmasters division, the most ever in a local tournament, with a score of 50. Bruce O’Connell, tying John Anderson for the best score overall, took the Masters division carding a 49. A close contest in the Intermediate division found Dallas Horsley of Whitewood in first place with a 58; a one stroke lead over Nelson Horsley of Whitewood and Dylan Tracy of Gillette, WY. Brenda Bure of Hill City carded a 73 and claimed the Women’s title. Justin Hirchert led the Recreational division to win by one stroke with a 62. Caleb Larimer claimed the Junior division, carding a 68. Scott Caesar was also recognized for his efforts in collecting the most pledge donations, as he raised $110 in pledges for the Food Bank.

The next tournament in Rapid City will be the Gold Rush, hosted by the Black Hills Disc Golf Confederacy May 15 - 17. For more information on disc golf events in the area visit blackhillsdiscgolf.com.

C-tier on the front nine of the new Brandon course on Valentines Day.

Two Rounds (10 holes unique holes, 20 holes per round)

Divisions:
Open - $40
Advanced - $30
Intermediate - $20

Players meeting at 9:40 and Tee off at 10:00

If you have any questions, please call me at 605-231-1233 or email at -email-

I am not raising any money for this tourney for pro's or am's, it is mostly just so we can all get out of the house and play in a tournament. I am also limiting the field to 40 so there will be 4 per hole if it fills.

Oh yeah, SWEET NEW COURSE with the only par 5 in the state.

Big Sioux Rec Area Course
Posted by Daniel on Tuesday 18 November 2008 - 15:16:00

Hi Everyone!!

Great news, we installed the A and B sleeves for the first 9 holes at the Big Sioux Rec Area 3 days ago. Within a week we should be playing the first 9 holes. We will also be installng a hanging basket on hole #4.

We are still working on the 2nd nine holes. THis 9 is all laid out, and we have actually installed 5-6 sleeves. We will have a chainsaw crew out there early this week cutting down trees we have marked, then we willl just need to move brush/wood, and "mow" the fairways. Not much mowing in the 2nd 9 because it is mostly in the woods or on the old mini disc golf course (3 holes). It's not set in stone yet, but there is a good chance we will complete the 2nd 9 in December. We have to remove the old baskets, pound the concrete of them, and probably weld on a tab for the sleeves. We also need to hope the relatively mild weather continues so we can concrete in the remaining sleeves.

We have recieved rave reviews on the course from the few people that have walked it. It will be a drastically different style of disc golf from what we have at Tuthill Park. More precision shots throgh trees, both long and short holes, and holes that force you to use a specific style of shot. The first tournament there will likey be our 2009 Ice Bowl.

Hope you all get a chance to throw this course in '09!!
